Les Baux-de-Provence, a village full of character

Classified as a heritage village, Les Baux-de-Provence draws its unique charm from its perch on the foothills of the Alpilles, its authenticity, and its rich architectural and historical heritage. Nestled in the heart of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park, this member of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France‘ enjoys a prestigious setting on a secluded plateau with an almost surreal landscape.
The Baux dynasty left a lasting mark on Provence for several centuries. The family built a fortress on the Alpilles so powerful that it worried King Louis XI. As a result, he ordered its dismantling at the end of the 15th century. The fortress was rebuilt during the Renaissance but was once again demolished in the 17th century following an assault by Richelieu’s troops.

In addition to the impressive remains of its fortress, the territory of Les Baux-de-Provence is home to a remarkable church that blends Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, featuring stained glass windows created by Max Ingrand. The village also boasts classified mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous art galleries, and several museums, including the Yves Brayer Painting Museum, the Santons Museum, and the Louis-Jou Foundation dedicated to metal engraving.

A land of traditions, the village of Les Baux-de-Provence comes alive throughout the year with several major cultural events, such as the Alpilles Festival, dedicated to traditional fieldwork music from around the world. Another cherished tradition is ‘Noël aux Baux,’ featuring the living Nativity scene during Midnight Mass and the ancient ritual of the ‘pastarage.’

To the south of the town, near the Val d’Enfer, former limestone quarries opened in the 19th century now serve as the backdrop for a one-of-a-kind exhibition-show. On the 14-meter-high white walls, stunning artworks are projected, drawing visitors into a mesmerizing and immersive experience.
The limestone quarries of Les Baux closed in 1935. In the 1950s and 1960s, they found their first artistic purpose thanks to Jean Cocteau, who filmed The Testament of Orpheus there.
The first audiovisual shows began at the quarry site in 1977. Since 2012, the management of the quarries has been entrusted to the cultural agency Culturespaces, which started its mission with an immersive exhibition featuring the works of Gauguin and Van Gogh.
Digital exhibitions have since followed, showcasing the worlds of Chagall, Renoir, and Monet, as well as enchanting creations centered around the works of Klimt, the Renaissance masters (Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael), Brueghel, and Picasso.
