Cavaillon, between the Alpilles and Luberon
A Greek and then Roman city in antiquity, Cavaillon was also an episcopal city during the Middle Ages. It preserves from its prestigious past an important civil and religious architectural heritage.
Its old town stretches out at the foot of the Saint-Jacques hill, and is home to heritage treasures: the Roman arch dating from the 1st century, the Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Véran cathedral and its adjoining 12th century cloister, the chapel of the Grand Couvent des Bénédictines, the former Hôtel Dieu hospital which today houses an archaeological museum and its remarkable chapel, the 18th century synagogue which still retains a medieval turret, and the Hôtel d’Agar, built in the bishopric garden on the remains of the ancient thermal baths, which boasts a 15th century Gothic tower and which conceals sublime Renaissance ceilings in its interiors.
Towering over the old town, Saint-Jacques Hill offers an exceptional view of the Luberon, the Durance Valley, and the Alpilles. From its summit, you can see Mont Ventoux and the Vaucluse mountain range. Emblematic of Cavaillon, the Saint-Jacques Chapel stands with its motley silhouette atop the hill of the same name.
Cavaillon is famous for being the melon capital. The fruit, originally of the Cantaloupe variety, has been cultivated there since the end of the 15th century. Producers in the Cavaillon melon industry are united and represented by the Cavaillon Master Melon Growers’ Union.
The juicy fruit is celebrated every year in Cavaillon at the beginning of July. The Brotherhood of Knights of the Order of the Melon of Cavaillon participates in the festivities.
The Melon Feria brings together a variety of exhibitions and stalls over a weekend, focusing on the melon, its history, its representations, and its imaginary world.
It is an opportunity to attend grand parades of carts, horses, marching bands, and brotherhoods, or to participate in cooking competitions.
At the heart of a privileged natural setting ideal for numerous outdoor activities, Cavaillon is renowned in Provence for its rock climbing on the Saint-Jacques hill and for its Via Ferrata, which is famous for its unique accessibility, accessible in just a few minutes from Cavaillon town center.
High above the town and with the Luberon as a panoramic view, the clifftop circuit includes rope and Nepalese bridges, beams, footbridges, bridges, and cave ladders.
